Baker - O'Higgins Area

Baker - O'Higgins Area

Finally, the Baker - O'Higgins Zone is the southernmost of the territory, starting with the Baker River in the north, to the giant lake O'Higgins, gateway to South Ice Field. This area has had a cultural tradition associated to cattle ranching, with large estates in the Chacabuco Valley area and the current Cochrane, but also other settlements around forest exploitation, specifically the quoted Ciprés de las Guaitecas, in Caleta Tortel or Villa O'Higgins, as a way of making sovereignty in the last corner of this vast area. You can see a unique architecture cove made of footbridges and stairs, see huemules in the Tamango National Reserve, sail to the giant O'Higgins glacier, trek to get closer to Mount San Lorenzo, or take a photo where the mythical Carretera Austral ends.

Float the Baker?s turquoise waters in this historic descent

There were no roads to Caleta Tortel until 2003; thus, settlers and visitors relied on the mighty Baker River to arrive. Recreate this historic tradition, by traveling the final kilometers to Caleta Tortel, aboard a wooden, locally-crafted launch. The luxury of having your luggage transported to the dock closest to your lodging, is a welcome bonus!
